Day One We fly into DC and tour the major sites and monuments. We will include the Jefferson, Lincoln, Korean War, Vietnam, FDR, Martin Luther King Jr, World War II and many other iconic sites in our nation’s capital. But what is special for this trip is being at the peak of the Cherry Blossom Festival. Thousands of blooms make this the most picturesque city in America. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Day Two Today is the Smithsonian day. Bill will guide you to the best museums and galleries and you will have the opportunity to spend the time needed to see the treasures of the Smithsonian collection from the First Ladies’ dresses, to the original Star-Spangled Banner, dinosaurs, Renaissance masterpieces, incredible flying machines and so much more. For returning visitors, there are new museums and exhibits to explore. Before, the Smithsonian though, Bill will take you to the National Archives to see the original Constitution, Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
Day Three We start our day at the Supreme Court. We will tour the court building and we will, if one is scheduled, attend a session of the court itself. You will have a chance to cheer on (silently) your favorite justice. The afternoon is Mount Vernon time with a visit to the fabled home and farm of our first president. An included museum even has Washington’s personal items—did someone say wooden dentures?
Day Four We have two tours in the morning before we enjoy a free afternoon to pursue your own museum choices, shopping, people watching or monument hopping. Our first stop is the Capitol itself. We won’t enter through a window or a restricted door—we get in the old-fashioned way—on a tour. See where the laws of our land are debated and moved forward. After the Capitol, we will visit one of the sites most don’t know about but is a secret must-see—the Academy of Sciences. This historic building combines the best of art and science both in exhibits and architecture.
Day Five We start the day with an unusual destination, but one that has been rated a top 5 for history and “coolness”. The O Street Museum is part history—Hoover housed his G-Men here and Rosa Parks used it as a home away from home. A mysterious building with dozens of secret doors and rooms to discover. It is also a giant collectible store with everything—the exhibits—for sale. What a crazy, fun, educational stop. We will also have a tour of Georgetown—from the University to the diplomatic center to the Exorcist steps—this is the center of much of the city’s power elite. That night, after our farewell dinner, we will have a night lights tour to see the historic monuments and buildings lit majestically.
Day Six Before we head home, Bill will have one more great surprise for you. This city has it all—incredible museums, historic monuments, powerful neighborhoods and especially this time of year—the most glorious Cherry Blossoms in the world.
