Tour Itinerary
Day One We will fly to a paradise of wildlife. Not only is Tanzania a wonderland of wildlife but it has incredible scenery and amazing culture we will explore.
Day Two We start our adventure with the highest mountain in Africa—Kilimanjaro. From there we will tour Arusha—a coffee producing mecca and Maasai marketplace. It is also a famous African peace-keeping city.
Day Three We have our first safari today. Our species count will rise quickly as this park is forested and has a great variety of animals found here and nowhere else. The beautiful Colobus monkey, elephants, buffalo, giraffe, antelope, zebra and 400 species of birds.
Day Four We head to the Serengeti today ready to intersect the migration and start counting the great predators that follow the herd. On the way, we will visit the Olduvai Gorge where the history of humankind is on display. Here the Leakey’s found evidence of early mankind that reset the history books. The museum showcases those discoveries. We start our exploration of the Serengeti this afternoon.
Day Five We start the day with a balloon ride over the Serengeti. Below you may see antelope, elephants, lions, cheetah and several species of birds. A champagne breakfast in the bush awaits our aerial travelers. We follow the migration today watching the millions of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles. One of the most exciting aspects is the predators—lions, cheetahs, leopards and hyena that follow the migration. We have seen dozens of predators a day—more than any other place on earth including giant crocs waiting for the migration to cross the river.
Day Six Another day in the Serengeti looking for some of the rarer animals like honey badgers, mongoose, rhinos and small cats like servals. Add to that over 400 species of birds and you have an incredible day. We will also visit the Maasai village to experience the culture of one of the most interesting people on earth.
Day Seven We head toward Ngorongoro Crater today again looking for new species like Grant’s gazelle, gerenuk, oryx and more. We arrive at the rim of the Crater. This extinct volcano is home to more big game per acre than anywhere else in the world. Twenty-five thousand big game animals call this crater home.
Day Eight We enter the crater looking for rhinos, cheetah, lion, buffalo, elephants, zebra, antelope, warthogs and much more. The bird life here is amazing—secretary birds, ostrich, large numbers of flamingo and many raptor species. This is one of the 7 Wonders of Africa. The hippo pool has one of the largest populations of hippos in the world.
Day Nine Another park today that will yield both incredible scenery and new animal species. Manyara National Park, a filming site of Tarzan, is right at the center of the rift valley so towering cliffs outline the wetlands below. Water birds, waterbuck, giant monitor lizards and buffalo wade through the swamps while giraffes graze on tree tops.
Day Ten We head south today to a park few ever see. This is a great bonus to be in a park that is special and not crowded. Swaga Swaga Game Reserve is famous as a lion reserve with the highest population of lions in Tanzania and as an elephant reserve with large numbers of big tuskers. We end the day in the capital of Tanzania—Dodoma.
Day Eleven We tour the capital city. This city was purposely built to center the capital better than the old one. We’ll see the new parliament, the Gaddafi Mosque, the cathedral and the beautiful new architecture throughout this just-created city.
Day Twelve We are going for culture and history this morning with a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site—Kondoa—one of the best rock art locations in the world. Some of these maybe 40,000 years old! The local tribes—Sandawe people—are special and deserve our attention. We end the day at Tarangire National Park another great wildlife area.
Day Thirteen We safari in Tarangire all day looking for a few more new species. This is a great park for tree climbing lions, elephants, buffalo and giraffe. For birders you can add a number of lifers here from the 400 plus species.
Day Fourteen One last morning game drive before we head back to Kilimanjaro. The majestic mountain and its snowcap reminds us of Hemingway and Toto (the song, not the dog). An iconic moment we all share together.
Day Fifteen We go home with visions of millions of wildebeest, lions in trees, hippo pools, giant crocs, giraffes, elephants and buffalo.
