Day One We fly to one of the best destination in Europe for art, architecture, food, flowers and its people—Netherlands known affectionately as Holland.
Day Two We began our tour with the capital of the Netherlands and one of the truly great cities of Europe—Amsterdam. This is a city of contrast and diversity from the canals we’ll boat on to the architecture we will marvel at, this is one incredible place. We’ll visit the Anne Frank House—one of the sobering reminders of World War II as well as the Red Light District that is both safe and fun. We’ll tour the New Church dating to the 1500’s full of art. We celebrate the beginning of this trip with a welcome dinner.
Day Three We will tour one of the most famous art museums in the world—the Rijks Museum. The renown Dutch masters from Rembrandt to Vermeer are featured here as well as other greats across Europe. The most famous Dutch masterpiece—Night Watch—is here. The afternoon will be free to check out other museums like the Van Gogh Museum, shop for a special souvenir, try Dutch specialties like their cheeses or just watch the world go by because it does in this great capital.
Day Four This is a very special day. We begin visiting the most famous garden in the world—the Keukenhof. We are there when the fields are in full tulip bloom. Nowhere and at no time will you see such a magnificent blend of color and fragrance. Have a memory card reserved for this day alone—you will need it. This afternoon we visit another specialty of Holland—pottery—specifically Delft pottery. We will see the tiles and porcelain made by hand in the factory whose town name is synonymous with beautiful ceramic ware. But the village itself is super cute and worth our time to explore. This is a day trip out of Amsterdam that rivals any you will ever have.
Day Five We begin the day driving through the picturesque countryside of the Netherlands. We arrive in the north at the Wildlands Adventure Zoo which is one of the finest zoos in all of Europe combined with a theme park feel—fun and educational. This afternoon we visit another hidden treasure—Giethoorn: the Venice of Holland. As we boat through this strange and wonderful place (the only way to get around), we are treated to tree shaded canals, lovely thatch roof cottages, lovely flower gardens and quaint wooden bridges.
Day Six Today we venture out of the Netherlands and into our second Benelux country of Belgium. Known for chocolates, magnificent architecture and picture postcard scenery, we head to Bruges. Before we exit Holland, though, we have one super last treat—the tour of Het Loo Palace. For nearly 3 centuries this palace was the country home for the royals. It is compared to Versailles and Schronbrunn Palaces as it is set on a large estate with massive gardens. Up to 1975 it was still home to the royal family. This is a must see that you get to see.
Day Seven Today we tour Bruges one of the most beautiful cities in Belgium. This is one of Bill’s favorites. It looks as if it never left the Middle Ages with perfectly preserved gems that make it one of the most historic cities in Europe. We will see the city by boat and bus. Ancient monasteries, patrician houses and a history of lace making creates a perfect atmosphere for photo buffs to excel.
Day Eight Another of Europe’s great capitals awaits us today. Our tour of Brussels includes the elegant Town Hall with its exquisite, delicate tower soaring over the city, the facades of the Grand Palace with its distinctive architecture and most important the Manneken—Pis—a two foot high statue of a boy peeing that has become the symbol of the city. You want great waffles—there is no place better than here where they are a meal or a delicious dessert. You will have some free time to museum hop, shop, taste or people watch in the city that is the capital to the European Union.
Day Nine We leave Belgium today and head to our final Benelux country—Luxembourg and its namesake capital city. On the way we venture through the Ardennes Forest where the most famous battle of World War II took place—the Battle of the Bulge. We will learn the history and see the terrain where that battle took place. This tiny country has it all—great castles, magnificent cathedrals and lovely little villages and we will see it all.
Day Ten We fly home with incredible memories of some of the smallest in size, but by no means smallest in appeal, countries in Europe. We’ll never forget the giant colorful tulip fields, picturesque canals, magnificent architecture, wondrous art, World War II history and some of the loveliest villages and landscapes anywhere.
