Day One: This is Bill’s pick for the year because it has a little of something for everyone—nature, history, culture and some of the most spectacular architecture in the world.
Day Two: We land in Dubai this evening and begin our adventure with a night stay here.
Day Three: This morning we fly into the Maldives—called by many as the most beautiful islands in the world. This is also a must-see now because, with rising waters from melting ice caps, they are literally going to disappear. We will be staying in an oceanside resort for the next three nights.
Day Four: We tour the main island of Male today. The architecture here can rival any city. Modern whimsical skyscrapers next to ancient buildings dating to the 14th century. We will visit the UNESCO World Heritage coral mosques dating to the 1500s Also on our tour is the National Museum. Originally opened in 1952, it has expanded and moved to a modern facility making it one of the best island museums in the world. We will also visit the large Friday Mosque. Buddhist temples, Hindu shrines, and Christian sites. This is a diverse, multicultural country. This afternoon, we have a great wildlife opportunity in front of us—a whale and dolphin cruise. The Maldives are home to 21 species of cetaceans making it one of the best places in the world to see these giant mammals.
Day Five: We have two great activities for you today. First, we will cruise the islands in a Dhoni—a traditional sailing craft with a graceful tall curved prow. We will have a special lunch on a private beach. The afternoon will allow you to go under the waves in a real submarine. Learn what it is like to be a scuba diver as you will see schools of blue or yellow-fin snapper, lionfish, yellow boxfish, turtles, shipwrecks and maybe feeding sharks.
Day Six: We fly back to Dubai and head to Abu Dhabi to tour the city and especially the Grand Mosque. This is the most impressive religious building you will ever see. The leaders of oil-rich Abu Dhabi did not hold back when they built this edifice.
Day Seven: A day to visit the brand new museum complex in Abu Dhabi. Here are three world-class museums to enjoy and marvel at. The Zayed National Museum tells the story of the UAE from its early nomadic days to falconry to the modern oil boom. Learn how the people coped in an environment otherwise hostile to man. The museum was designed by Pulitzer Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster and resembles the wings of a falcon. The Louvre Museum is an extension of Paris’ greatest museum housing many of the parent museum’s masterpieces. The Guggenheim, designed by Frank Gehry, is one of the largest contemporary art museums in the world. We end the day in Dubai.
Day Eight: We tour Dubai today. The city skyline is the main attraction and we will see it from ground level and also at the top of the Burj Khalifa (world’s tallest building). You will also see the new Dubai Tower which is the next world’s tallest set for completion in 2020. We will also visit the Dubai Museum and most unique of all the Camel Market where these ships of the desert are bought and sold (this could be your trip souvenir!)
Day Nine: This is the first of three days in the World’s Fair. Over 132 countries will have pavilions. Connecting Minds, Creating the Future is the fair theme and challenges the participants to focus on opportunity, mobility, and sustainability in a fast-changing world. There will be theme pavilions, business displays, and super-awesome buildings. The UK, for instance, is bringing Stephen Hawkings’ last experiment alive that challenges people to think about how we can communicate with other planetary life. World’s Fairs are crazy good so enjoy Dubai’s.
Day Ten & Eleven: A second & a third day to investigate the fair. You won’t scratch the surface in 2 days so Bill will help direct you. Imagine Disney’s Epcot Center twenty times as large and you have a World’s Fair.
Day Twelve: We fly home today dreaming of World’s Fairs—paradise islands and the unique skyline of Dubai. This is the trip of a lifetime and then some.
